American Rapper, Meek Mill, has apologized to the people of Ghana after shooting his music video at their presidency, known as the Jubilee House. The short video, which was meant to be a teaser to his new song and released on his Instagram page on Sunday and has since been deleted, sparked an uproar and backlash from Ghanaians, with some calling on all those responsible for what they called “this despicable desecration of the Jubilee House by Meek Mill” to be fired immediately.
In a tweet, Mill apologized to the people of Ghana and the office of the president saying “We still gonna push to make the connection between black people in America and Africa… What I’m trying to do is more than a video.” He added that the video was not in any form or shape meant to disrespect Ghanaians.
In the short video, Mill and his crew took drone shots at the forecourt of the Jubilee House and were seen rapping some content that appear to be explicit lyrics and dancing at the Jubilee House where they were invited by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Mill is seen in different places at the presidency, from the frontage, through the main corridors, in the main conference hall – at a point positioned behind the presidential lectern – and later in a sitting area rapping. The rapper and his crew later stood in front of the lectern mostly used by the President during national addresses, to take some shots. Some Ghanaians took to twitter to express their outrage.
In his apology, Mill said he didn’t think they knew it was video footage they were going to shoot. His visit to the presidency came after his performance at the just-ended Afronation Festival of December 29th-30th, 2022 in Accra.
